Getting Started on RadHR

RadHR.org has gradually built-up a lot of different radical internal policy content. If you’re new to the site, or newer to collective policy making, this blog will guide you through some of the key resources we’ve been collecting here over the years.

Maybe you’re already familiar with what happens on RadHR, but if not, here’s a bit of a sense of some of the key links and resources available in the community.

As a starter, here are six steps for thinking about writing new radical policies more collectively and four ways to go about doing it together, depending on the nature of the policy, your capacities and who is affected by it.

Connections with the wider community

The best thing about RadHR is the hundreds of others who are also trying to find ways to organise themselves and their groups according to radical and caring values. In the unlikely event you’re not on the online forum, yet sign up now! Assuming you are, why not see if anyone has posted a question that you have some thoughts about? Or share one of your own, to tap into the community hivemind?

Nearly 100 radical policies to learn from & adapt!

The policy library is an ever-growing treasure trove of documents that groups like yours have poured their heart and soul into: all in pursuit of finding ways to align their collective practices with their values. Whether you’re looking for an equitable pay policy, a non-punitive grievance process, or a care-driven leave policy, odds are that someone else in the community has uploaded a version of this before.

The library has grown because people like you have shared the results of the thinking and practices that have gone on in their groups and organisations. Even if you’ve only tweaked 10% of another policy from the library, it’s likely your tweak will make it that much more relevant to another group searching the library. So go ahead and upload what you’ve got!

Events to meet others figuring this stuff out

We know that this work can be lonely and that it can be hard to find others to discuss it with. The forum may be a starting point, but we run a few different types of events to connect with others who are working on similar group policy and process questions (whether for advice, or for a bit of moral support).

The stories behind the policies

Anyone who has spent any time with the intricacies of internal policy making, knows that the docs themselves are only ever a starting point. The ‘Why’ we end up choosing to do something in a particular way, is often as important as ‘what’ we end up doing. To that end, we encourage members of the community to share their reflections on their own internal policy making processes, in the community forum, but also in dedicated blogs. Have a look through the blogs to see what has gone on behind the scenes of someone else’s radical policy making process! (And let us know if you have an idea for a blog, as we have a bit of budget to help bring your stories to the community.)

Meeting templates to support collective process

Sometimes the process is more important than the outcome. If you’re looking for ways to help your group to have the tricky conversations that underpin most radical internal policies (and have been through the six steps and four ways blogs) we’ve developed a series of DIY meeting templates to help you explore, prioritise, design, adapt and give feedback on policies together.

Guides on the law & where our values clash

We know that there are times when you just need to know what the law says about a particular policy, or to have a sense of where your values are likely to clash with some of the default resources that are out there. For this, we have a range of guides we’ve co-produced around different specific policy types, and we have others from partner organisations that we’ve been lucky enough to republish.
