POLICY
Peer reflection & supervision
A support and accountability system for a small non-hierarchical organisation, designed to avoid the pitfalls of annual reviews and strengthen a disability justice approach.
Policy
Context
This policy and collection of documents is Tripod’s system for support and accountability, which is part of our People & Dynamics strand of operational work.
It replaces old ‘annual reviews’ and ‘probationary reviews’ which were capacity-intensive and not enough in line with our values of disability justice and non-hierarchy.
The new system includes: an initial review; 6-monthly peer reflections; and regular peer supervision sessions. The peer supervision and peer reflection have many of the functions of traditional line management: practical and pastoral support and accountability, as well as an emphasis on learning and skill development.
Note from Tripod: This policy was developed after the process and decisions in a review led to a painful conflict which impacted all staff and the functioning of the team. It was a reflection of ableist culture and overwork, overstretching and both formal and informal hierarchy.
